Delving into election broadcasts and thinking about the role of the media
Week 3:
This week the Parallel Elections Project focuses on the media’s role in elections, helping to develop pupils media and information literacy skills. The video above provides an introduction from Professor Sir John Curtice on the history and role of the media in elections and can support the week 3 resources.
Lesson 1:
In this lesson, pupils are able to explore the different ways in which the media operates during a general election. Examining the role of newspapers, party election election broadcasts and social media. Additionally, they will consider the importance of being critical towards information they receive and making judgements on mis, dis and mal information.
Lesson 2:
During this lesson focusing on the parallel election in schools, pupils will apply the knowledge they have gained, creating interviews and press releases about the policies their parties are releasing. Some may wish to be creative, designing and editing their own party election broadcasts. Fact checking and correct use of the manifestos will remain at the forefront of the teams roles.
