Election Week!

Week 5: This week marks a culmination of learning and planning for your pupils. Where they’ll have the opportunity to exercise their right to express their informed views on who they think should govern the UK. 

There should also be opportunities for the candidates and campaign teams to make a final call for voters and explain their policies. 

In lessons or form time, teachers may find this tool from Democracy Club helpful, which lets students explore who their candidates are: https://whocanivotefor.co.uk/

Some students may like to engage with https://whogetsmyvote.org/ to see which political party their views resonate with, this could be used with older students as a home learning task or part of a short task for form times the day before the election.

Included in this week’s resources are tips and case studies that will support the smooth running of the election in your schools. We expect your pupils are excited to see their projects come into fruition. We look forward to hearing about it!

To gain valuable insights into how young people across the nation feel about politics, we’ve created a simple reporting form. We encourage you to submit your school’s results and contribute to the larger parallel election result. This will allow young people to see a broader picture of their peers’ experiences. The deadline to have your school’s results included in our post-election analysis is 9am, Monday 8th July.

Lesson: This lesson provides an opportunity for students to learn about the process of voting and the recent changes in the law surrounding voter ID. Pupils will also have the opportunity to hear from Sir Professor John Curtice who will explain the counting process and when and why a recount may occur. 

Teachers may be interested to know, the BBC will be streaming live from all counts across the country on 4th July. This could be a fantastic opportunity for your students to witness the democratic process in action on the Friday morning.
