Developing your knowledge for teaching Citizenship - Part 3

This is the third of a three part series of CPD sessions that will support teachers who are new to Citizenship

About this event

When planning Citizenship, it is important to consider more than just the knowledge you will teach in a single lesson. Medium-term planning – developing your schemes of work – should include a well-structured pathway of conceptual and subject-specific knowledge that you want students to achieve by the end of the unit.

In this session, Professor Lee Jerome and Zoe Baker will explore the importance of ‘big picture planning’. Based on recent research carried out with UCL, Lee Jerome will discuss the clear links between the five types of knowledge Citizenship teachers need to develop to ensure that their curriculum is both powerful and meaningful for today’s world. Zoe Baker will then provide practical examples of using the different types of knowledge in schools to develop their own curriculum and resources for students.

Who is it for?

Teachers new to Citizenship, and those looking to develop their understanding of how to teach the subject.

Why attend?

By the end of this workshop you will:

  • Gain confidence in embedding knowledge across a curriculum to ensure student recall.
  • Gain greater understanding of the complex nature of curricular planning.
  • Develop an understanding of the nuanced nature of knowledge needed to develop a curriculum in Citizenship.

Links to the CCF and ECF criteria

This CPD will support the Initial Teacher Education Core Content Framework (CCF) and Early Career Framework (ECF), addressing the following areas:

  • Discussing and analysing with expert colleagues how to identify possible misconceptions and planning how to prevent these forming.
  • Linking what pupils already know to what is being taught (e.g. explaining how new content builds on what is already known).
  • Discussing and analysing with expert colleagues the rationale for curriculum choices, the process for arriving at current curriculum choices and how the school’s curriculum materials inform lesson preparation.
  • Providing opportunity for all pupils to learn and master essential concepts, knowledge, skills and principles of the subject.
  • Discussing and analysing with expert colleagues how to revisit the big ideas of the subject over time and teach key concepts through a range of examples.

CPD strand – Introduction to Citizenship

This strand is designed for anybody who is new to the subject, from ITE trainees to experienced teachers who are teaching Citizenship for the first time. These events will allow participants to develop their understanding of the core substantive knowledge of the subject, key concepts and best practice in pedagogy.
